Facebook Workshop for Seniors at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)

Do you want a way to stay better connected with your friends and family, or to be reconnected with old friends? Are your children and grandchildren communicating solely through their computer and phone? Have you heard of the phrases ‘Facebooking,’ ‘posting on someone’s wall,’ or ‘being tagged in a photo’? If yes, then Facebook is the place for you!

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the College of Continuing and Professional Education at Kennesaw State University would like to invite you to join us for a class to learn the proper way to ‘Facebook’. Whether we like it or not, Facebook is quickly becoming one of the most popular forms of communication for all age groups.

Facebook is a social network that was first developed in 2004 with the sole purpose of keeping students at Harvard University connected with one another. After many requests from other colleges and universities to have this social network, it was expanded to various parts of the country and is now used in several other countries around the world. In the United States, nearly 8% of people that are active users of Facebook are aged sixty-five and older!

“Regardless of what may be the hot social media portal of any given year, social networking has become a core part of our daily lives – and Facebook is currently leading the pack,” states Michelle Girage, Assistant Director for OLLI.

Because Facebook is so popular among all ages, it is a great way to stay connected to friends and family. OLLI’s course, Facebook Basics, includes information on how to safely set up a personalized profile, how to upload pictures for your friends and family to see, and how to stay current through messaging loved ones. Lynne Mock, OLLI instructor, will provide tips to keep intruders away and tips on what information you should always keep private. Facebook users are able to set privacy controls on their profile to limit what other users are able to view. All Facebook users should take advantage of this tool in order to keep their information safe and secure.

Course is scheduled for May 16th from 9am – 1pm and cost is $79.00. Space is limited so reserve your spot today!

Lawn & Garden tips from Pike Nursery

Inside a wooden shed containing gardening equipment

Keep your lawn and garden in prime condition as hot weather approaches with these tips from Pike Nursery:

In the Garden

  • Keep the Color Going. There’s still time to plant annuals for spring and summer enjoyment. Begin succession planting of hot weather annuals such as Zinnias, Marigolds, Celosia and Portulaca now and continue through the month of June. Pinch back annuals to encourage bushy compact growth.
  • Tomato Time. Keep tomatoes on a regular watering and fertilizer schedule for a bountiful harvest through summer.
  • Go Crazy with Veggies. Now is the time to plant all summer vegetables including okra, pumpkin, sweet potato, eggplant, peppers, peanuts, watermelon, black-eyed peas, butter peas, butter beans and more.
  • Plant Now, Enjoy Year After Year. Now is the perfect time to plant long-blooming perennials like daylilies, coneflowers, and shasta daisies.
  • Go Tropical. Plant tropical vines at your mailboxes for bright flowers all summer. Try climbing mandevilla or bougainvillea.
  • Feeding Time. Fertilize roses and azaleas now to encourage a second bloom, and continue feeding them on schedule through the month of June.
  • Water-Wise, Weed-Free Gardening. Mulch all garden beds well to help regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and keep weeds at bay.
  • Shield Yourself from the Sun. Make sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunscreen when playing in the dirt.

In the House

  • Move Outdoors. Houseplants can now reside outdoors for the summer. Place houseplant containers in an area that receives partial shade – not direct sun.
  • Feeding Time. Continue feeding your houseplants monthly and water as needed.

For the Lawn

  • Fertilize Centipede Lawns. One application per year is all that is required.
  • Sow Warm Season Grasses. After mid-May, sow warm season grasses such as bermuda and centipede.
  • Eliminate Weeds. Use weed killer on lawns only if temperature is above 70 degrees F.
  • Stop Fire Ants. Use Amdro on Fire Ant mounds then treat mounds with an insecticide 48 hours later.

The Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church presents the 22nd Annual Marietta Greek Festival May 18-20. The Marietta Greek Festival will be held on the beautiful church grounds at 3431 Trickum Road in East Cobb. Many people in the East Cobb Community have watched the Marietta Greek Festival grow from humble beginnings in 1990 at the Cobb County Civic Center to Cobb County’s largest ethnic event. 2012 marks the 22nd anniversary of this beloved Marietta tradition and all are invited to come celebrate and enjoy the Greek culture. Enjoy homemade Greek food and pastries, live Greek music, authentic Greek dancing, exotic shopping and much more. There is something for every member of the family.

Festival guests will enjoy traditional ethnic specialties such as Chicken Oreganato, Pastitsio, Dolmades and the great Gyro sandwich. Exquisite Greek pastries, breads, cheese and spinach pies and honey puffs are highlights you won’t want to miss. On the lighter side, Niko’s Taverna serves a delicious variety of Greek hors d’oeuvres along with imported beer and wines.

The South’s only authentic Greek amphitheater is the venue for continuous live music, dance performances and world-class hospitality.

Guided tours of the beautiful Byzantine sanctuary and chapel are offered throughout the weekend. Guests will be in awe of the rich color, distinctive iconography and ancient beauty of the interior of a Greek Orthodox Church. The art and design of the edifice not  only create a distinctive atmosphere for worship, but also reflect and embody the fundamental beliefs of Orthodoxy. Come and  learn about the Orthodox Faith which has not changed since the time of the Apostles.

Over a dozen authentic vendors set up their shops inside the Festival’s Agora (Marketplace). Come by to see items created in the Greek tradition such as fine imported Greek jewelry, handmade linens, hip scarves, delicious Greek pastries, Greek cookbooks and travel books, decorative art pieces, hand done oil paintings, beautiful Mediterranean candle holders, glass blown items and wood
crafted items from the Holy Land–just to name a few! You will find an endless assortment of items that reflect the Hellenic Culture and its cherished traditions.
