Publisher’s Note: The Magic of Mothers

photo-mom & me -1963

Mom & Me 1964

I was lucky to have one of my biggest role models living in the same house with me, my mother. As clichéd and corny as it may sound, its true. She was a working mom with five children striving to not only give us the material things: clothes, food, a safe place to live, private school.

She also gave us enough love that each night when my brother and sisters and I went to bed, we were secure in the knowledge that we were loved. With my father’s support, she managed to finish her college degree (which had been interrupted by the birth of 5 children.) One of my earliest memories of my mother is attending her graduation seeing her dressed in the classic cap and gown holding the diploma. That mental snapshot is burned into my memory because it  represents the values she stood for and instilled in me: the importance of education, independence, and determination.

That’s why I am happy to sponsor the EAST COBBER Mother of the Year essay contest. By honoring a mother in our community, I hope to honor all of the millions and millions of mothers whose lives
are compelling examples of unwavering, unyielding, uninterrupted commitment to their children and families. This year’s EAST COBBER Mother of the Year, Kathleen Leard is that example of a mother’s unwavering commitment to her family. With an autistic son, Kathleen not only advocates, but has also legislated for improved access to special therapies for autistic children. She worked with state legislators to pass Ava’s Law. In 2009, Ava’s Law established a committee to examine the autism insurance reform issue and develop ways the state legislature can stop discrimination by insurance companies of Georgia’s children with autism.

Mom & Me 2011

This issue spotlights another May tradition: graduation. EAST COBBER features the STAR students (page 8), scholarship winners (page 10) and lists the local high school graduations (page 16.) By publishing stories about these annual rituals and celebrations, I hope they inspire you to share in the joy of these proud accomplishments and appreciate the good in our community. Like Mother’s Day, the EAST COBBER publishes stories every month as a way to publicly express a love and  reverence for the people contributing to the quality of life in East Cobb. By spotlighting the people, places and events that  are unique and special to East Cobb I hope this good news brightens your day and affirms the precious profoundness in our everyday East Cobb lives.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Atlanta Lyric Theatre has announced details for the 2012 JR. LYRIC Summer Musical Theatre Workshop. The workshop will take place July 9-20, 2012 and allow area youth the opportunity to audition, rehearse and perform in Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr. while gaining professional theatre skills. Curriculum will include a professional audition workshop, teaching portions of choreography and music from the selected show, an actual audition and casting. By the completion of the camp, students will have a professional headshot, short monologue and song prepared for future auditions.

“Students participating in Atlanta Lyric Theatre’s JR. LYRIC program will be exposed to the entire process that goes into creating a successful show, from the audition stage through performance,” said Brandt Blocker, Artistic Director. “We want these kids to have a fun, authentic experience and leave them with basic theatrical skills they can use both on-stage and off.”
