Walton girls settle for second

Cherokee rallied from a six-stroke deficit to post a 155 team score and complete a four-stroke victory over Walton in the Region 5AAAAA girls championship Wednesday at City Club Marietta.

Walton’s Abbey Williams and Meredith Singer combined to shoot 80 over the first nine holes of the par-71, 4,715-yard course, while Cherokee’s Meredith Gray and Anna Higgins totaled 86. The back nine, however, proved to be the difference as Cherokee’s duo combined to shoot a 69, compared to 79 from Williams and Singer.

Cherokee will join Walton in the Class AAAAA state championship May 7 at West Lake Country Club in Augusta.

Walton, which captured last year’s region title, will be making its third consecutive trip to the state tournament, while Cherokee, a first-time region champion, will be making a fourth-straight appearance.

“It’s always a goal to make the state tournament and we have,” Walton coach Richard Myrick said. “Three years in a row now we’ve gotten to go, so that’s a big deal. You have to have a ticket and get through region to win state, so we’re pretty excited.”

Etowah fell two strokes shy of a possible state tournament appearance after firing 161. Woodstock (174) was fourth, followed by Lassiter (200) and Marietta (211). Wheeler did not have enough players finish to record a team score.

“I thought we played really well on the front side,” Myrick said. “In golf, there’s no defense. Cherokee played so well on the back (nine), you have to tip your cap to them. They deserve to win. We played better by one stroke than we did last year, shooting 159. Cherokee’s 155 is probably one of the top five scores in the state.

“Normally, if you can shoot 150-anything, you’ll win your region, so for us to shoot 159 and not win, I’m not upset or disappointed by it. I thought our girls played pretty good. Cherokee just played better.”

Williams finished with a 78 and Singer 81. Peyton Melcher added an 86 for Walton, while Krissy Stafford had 89.

“The top three girls on the team are sophomores, and we have one senior, Krissy Stafford,” Myrick said. “She’s been steady all year. Our goal is to get to the state and finish in the top three. We’ll find out this year on how we do.”

Lassiter was led by Corry Edwards (98), Emily Edwards (102) and Isabelle Rudd (129).

Katie Wood led Marietta with a 98, Antonia Hodges had 113 and Katie Schafer finished with 121.

Lindsey McKoy (113) was Wheeler’s lone scorer.

Etowah freshman Melanie Talbott defeated Higgins in a two-hole playoff to capture the individual title in her first region tournament. It also qualified her for the state championship as the low scorer not on an advancing team.

“It feels pretty good (to win),” Talbott said. “I came out today and played decent, but it was good enough to get me first. I’m a little surprised I won.”

Talbott eagled the par-4 18th to finish with 77. Higgins, in the group behind Talbott, carded 34 on the back nine to also score 77, forcing the playoff.

Both players double-bogeyed the par-4 first hole.

Talbott’s tee shot missed left of the fairway and landed near a fence. The right-handed golfer needed two left-handed swings to put the ball in a safe position, and her fourth shot landed on the green 15 feet from the hole, resulting in a two-putt for double bogey.

Higgins’ first shot did find the fairway, but she took four pitch shots to reach the green before making a 2-foot putt.

On the par-4 second hole, Talbott pitched her second shot to within 4 feet of the pin, while Higgins’ birdie attempt rolled 10 feet past the hole before she settled for bogey. Talbott then two-putted for par to win the individual region title.

Joining Talbott and Higgins atop the leaderboard were Williams, Gray, Singer, Woodstock’s Brittany Erdeman (84), Etowah’s Ashley Anthony (84), Melcher, Stafford and Woodstock’s Madison Blackburn (90).

Georgia Rugby Festival at Pope High School

2012-04-25_2131

The First Annual Georgia Rugby Festival will be held on Saturday, May 5 from 10am-6pm at the Pope High School Stadium,  3001 Hembree Road.

Rugby is returning to the Olympics in 2016, and Greyhounds Rugby wants everyone to love the sport before then!  Did you even know that rugby existed in Georgia?  How about that there are high school rugby teams – both boys and girls?  Or men’s and women’s rugby leagues?  Even rugby at the college level in Georgia?  The purpose of the 1st Annual Georgia Rugby Festival is to showcase this sport at all levels with an all-day event.

The Festival begins with a Men’s/College Rugby Sevens Tournament, with 12 matches total.  These will be fast-paced rugby matches with very athletic team members.  Each team consists of seven players on the field and each half is played for only seven minutes.  It is the version of rugby that will be played in the Olympics beginning in 2016.  And there are six great teams lined up to play rugby at its best!

Then play moves to traditional 15’s rugby.  Each team has 15 players on the field with 35 minute halves.

One of the best things about high school sports in Georgia is the rivalries.  And rugby is no different.  So on May 5th, alumni from Greyhounds Rugby (Pope High School) and Raiders Rugby (Walton High School) will play in a first-ever alumni match.  May the best team win!

And the highlight of the festival will be the Georgia High School Rugby Association championship matches.  The first match will be for the Community High School Championship between two teams with players from multiple schools in their community.  The final match of the day will be the Single High School Championship between two teams consisting of players from only their school.  These teams have worked all season to earn the right to be there.  Come out and cheer on your favorite team!

In addition to great rugby, there will be concessions, vendors, raffles and more.  So bring your family and friends and spend the day at the 1st Annual Georgia Rugby Festival on May 5th.  Admission is only $3 and covers the entire event.  Hosted by Greyhounds Rugby Football Club.  For more information, visit www.GaRugbyFestival.com.

McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA offers free swim assessments for Water Wise Initiative

Swimming

Today, over 3,500 American children a year are treated in the emergency room due to a drowning-related incident.  Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 60-70% of African –American and Hispanic children cannot swim and only 13% of kids who come from a non-swimming household will ever learn to swim.  African-American children drown at a rate nearly three times higher than their Caucasian peers.  Building on a foundation of more than 100 years of swim instruction, the McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA has launched a Water Wise Initiative to raise awareness about the importance of learning to swim.  This initiative is a multifaceted program which includes free swim lessons to lower-income, local apartment communities, free swim checks monthly at the McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA for parents to assess their child’s swimming ability and formal swimming instruction.  “Every child in our community, by second grade, needs to learn to swim.  It is a critical skill that can determine the difference between life and death in a matter of seconds” said Becky Shipley, Executive Director, McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA.

This Sunday, April 22st the McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA will offer FREE swim checks.  From 11am – 12pm, you can bring your child to the YMCA in Marietta and certified swim instructors will assess your child’s swim ability.  Are you sure your child will be safe in the water this summer?  Bring them to the Y for this free swim assessment.  The McCleskey-East Cobb YMCA wants to educate parents, children and caregivers about the learn-to-swim resources available in our community.  By raising awareness and providing the opportunity for more kids to learn to swim, we are saving lives.  To inquire about the YMCA’s Water Wise program, please contact Sarah Ernst at 770-977-5991 or sarahe@ymcaatlanta.org.
