The Cobb County Police Department’s S.T.E.P. (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) Unit is reporting a fatality crash, which occurred on northbound Interstate-75, just south of the Barrett Parkway overpass in Kennesaw.
According to investigators and information from the crash scene, the the driver of a black 2011 Buick Regal was pulled over on the right emergency shoulder, just north of the northbound exit ramp to Barrett Parkway. As an employee of the Georgia Department of Transportation H.E.R.O. (Highway Emergency Response Operator) Unit was about to pull over and render assistance, the driver (for reasons unknown) drove away from him northbound on the interstate. Approximately 100 yards north of where the car was originally stopped, the vehicle left the eastside of the roadway (just south of the Ernest Barrett Parkway bridge) down the ravine and into the wood line. The vehicle became fully involved with fire after colliding with the trees.
Within moments of extinguishing the flames, the Cobb County Fire and Emergency Services located a body in the driver’s seat of the burned out car.
Though identification was located on the body, the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office has assumed jurisdiction and will attempt to make positive identification through dental records.
This crash remains under investigation and anyone with information about it is asked to call (770) 499-3987.
