Cobb County Police investigating Thursday’s fatality crash, I-285 lane closures scheduled for Sunday

Cobb County Police are investigating two recent incidents. The first, a fatality crash, occurred on Thursday, August 16, at 4:20pm on eastbound I-285 just west of the Chattahoochee River bridge.

Preliminary information from the crash scene indicates that a white 2006 International semi tractor-trailer, a black 2006 Lexus GS430 and a black 1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck were all traveling eastbound on I-285.  Due to conflicting accounts, it is not clear as to which vehicle made the first improper lane change.  However, it is known that the passenger car and the semi tractor-trailer collided and the passenger car and the pickup truck collided.  The pickup truck then overturned several times before coming to rest in the roadway.

The driver of the white 2006 International semi tractor- trailer was not injured and has been identified as 39 year old Jamie Poole of Lula, Georgia.

The driver of the black 2006 Lexus was not injured and has been identified as 37 year old Mark Shorthouse of Atlanta, Georgia.

The driver of the black1997 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck has been identified as 50 year old Enio Tejada of Lawrenceville, Georgia.  He was sent by ambulance to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.  Mr. Tejadas passenger was deceased at the scene but his name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation into this fatality crash will continue as the affected lanes of eastbound I-285 will be temporarily closed this Sunday morning, August 19, beginning at 8am, while S.T.E.P. investigators reconstruct the fatality crash scene.  Georgia D.O.T’s. HERO Units will also be assisting Cobb authorities with the temporary lane closures.

The Cobb County Police Department’s S.T.E.P. (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) Unit continues to investigate a fatality crash, which occurred on Shawnee Lane at Pawnee Drive in Marietta on Thursday, August 16, at 6:47pm.

Preliminary information from the crash scene indicates that the rider of a silver 2005 Honda CBR 600 motorcycle was traveling northbound on Shawnee Lane approaching Pawnee Drive when the driver of a maroon 2007 Toyota Sienna LE van attempted to turn left from westbound Pawnee Drive to southbound Shawnee Lane.  As a result, the motorcycle rider (and his 12 year old male passenger) struck the driver’s side door of the van.

The driver of the Toyota has been identified as 30 year old Bophay St.John of Marietta, Georgia.  Neither she, her husband (who was in the front seat) nor their three children (who were all properly restrained in the rear passenger seat) were injured in the crash.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office was notified this morning by Wellstar Kennestone Hospital authorities that the driver of the motorcycle died as a result of injuries he sustained in the crash.  He has been identified as 35 year old Vishal Jitendra Patel.  The 12 year old male passenger is currently being treated at Eggleston Children’s Hospital for non life-threatening injuries.
