Cobb public libraries will host many fun and informative events in celebration of Black History Month and the immense contributions of African Americans to our nation. All activities are free and open to the public.

  • Learn Genealogy Tools
    South Cobb Regional Library
    1-2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6
    Participants will learn how to track their ancestry with a special focus on African American genealogy tools. Limit of 14, unless you bring your own laptop. Call 678-398-5828 to register.
  • Food History of African Americans in the South
    Switzer Library
    7-8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10
    Explore foods that were brought to America on slave ships and how slaves survived on these foods after they arrived. You will also see how we still eat many of the same foods, but with a healthy twist. Learn how herbs can take the place of salt in seasoning dishes and join the cooking demonstration to sample healthy dishes and take home some recipes for better living.
  • Magical Heroes: The Lives and Legends of Great African American Magicians
    South Cobb Regional Library
    2-3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13
    Learn about the little-known topic of African American magicians. This is a family event and children of all ages are welcome. Jim Magus Salterella will share about his book, “Magical Heroes: The Lives and Legends of Great African American Magicians,” which won the prestigious Society of American Magicians’ Hall of Fame Literary Award.

  • Cowboys of Color
    South Cobb Regional Library
    1-3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27
    The Award-winning illustrator R. Gregory Christie will discuss the life of Bass Reeves, U.S. marshall and many other “Cowboys of Color.” After the presentation, Christie will help participants create their own “Badge of Distinction.” This is a family event and children of all ages are invited.
