Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military, as well as veterans and those who are still currently serving. This Memorial Day, visit one of the many happenings around Atlanta to learn more about our history and fallen soldiers, or participate in events that honor our servicemen and women. Here are some special events going on throughout Metro Atlanta this Memorial Day weekend:

Acworth Memorial Day Ceremony. Join both veterans and current servicemen to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have fought and died for our nation. This year’s keynote speaker will be retired US Coast Guard Captain Chuck Polk. Held at Veterans Memorial at Patriots Point in Cauble Park. 10:00am. Free. Cauble Park, 4425 Beach Street, Acworth. Military Timeline Program: The Atlanta History Center in Buckhead will host this event that offers attendees a chance to revisit wars from the Revolutionary War to today’s conflicts. Meet veterans and living history interpreters, and enjoy self-guided tours of Veterans Park using smartphones. 10am-4pm. $16.50 for adults, $13 for students and seniors, $11 for children, and free for members or those with a military identification card. Salute Our Troops 5K. Hosted by the nonprofit Charity Benevolent Fund, the fourth annual Salute Our Troops 5K will take place at Chastain Park in Buckhead. Proceeds will go towards providing financial assistance to local soldiers, veterans, and their families. 7am: registration. 8am: race starts. $30 in advance or $35 on race day, with discounts for veterans. Dunwoody Memorial Day Tribute. The City of Dunwoody will host its Memorial Day Tribute at Brook Run Park’s Veteran’s Memorial. 10am-11am. Free. City Park, 4770 North Peachtree Road, Dunwoody. More info: www.dunwoodyga.gov.

Marietta National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony. The National Memorial Day Association of Georgia is hosting this event that honors our veterans, both past and present, who served as well as those who gave their life for our country’s freedom. The ceremony features patriotic music, posting of the colors, prayers, a gun salute, and inspiring speakers. 12pm. Free. Marietta National Cemetary, 500 Washington Avenue Northeast, Marietta. Memorial Day 5K/10K. Start and finish in the parking lot of LA Fitness on the corner of Sandy Plains & E. Piedmont. 6:30 am: packet pickup & race day registration. 7:30 am: races start. Roswell Remembers Memorial Day 2016. The largest Memorial Day Ceremony in Georgia with featured speaker, Major General Ronald Johnson. 10am. Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremony: Join the city of Smyrna’s Veterans Committee for their Memorial Day ceremony at the 20 th Century Veterans Memorial for a service to honor our veterans and show our appreciation of their commitment to peace. Woodstock Memorial Day Ceremony. Join the City of Woodstock for a heartfelt and meaningful ceremony honoring all those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, life itself. Free. 10am.
