Evelyn Champion was recently elected President of the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) and will serve a two year term from 2017-2019. Champion started teaching in Cobb County in 1994 and has served GMEA as Vice President and State Orchestra Chair. Founded in 1938, GMEA is one of fifty-one state affiliates of the National Association for Music Education and has thousands of members, including public school, private school, college and university, and private studio music teachers. The Georgia Music Educators Association has the fifth largest membership among state music education associations in the United States.

Champion graduated Magna Cum Laude with High Honors from the University of Georgia in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education, and holds her Master of Music Education and Education Specialist degrees from the University of Georgia as well. Champion taught orchestra at Daniell Middle School for nine years before transferring to Sprayberry High School in 2003, where she now serves as Orchestra Director and Guitar teacher. She also chartered the Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter at Sprayberry.

Champion is the 2011 Georgia American String Teachers Association String Teacher of the Year and the 2012 Georgia Music Educators Association Music Educator of the Year. She is a 2013 “Woodruff Arts Center Salutes Georgia Arts in Education Leaders” finalist for Music Education.

Champion taught Advanced Placement Music Theory in the Georgia Virtual School for five years and for many years at Sprayberry, where she also served as department chair. A freelance violinist, Champion performs with the Georgia Symphony Orchestra and is the co-director of the Encore Orchestra Camp. She lives in Marietta with her husband, J. Champion, and sons David, Charlie, and Sam, ages 11, 7 and 4.
