A Message from Back By Popular Demand Owner, Melissa Baxter: Give to Angel Fund and Help Animals in Need

BBPD owner Melissa Baxter and Angel

It takes so much to run, manage and oversee BBPD and non of it would be possible without the customers, consignors or employees. You are all truly gems and for that I thank you. While I love you all, I too sneak away during the year for some fun in the sun and non-consignment thinking time. This year I was fortunate enough to go on a vacation with close friends to Cozumel, Mexico. The day before we were to leave, while sitting at the pool I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye and was surprised to see a dog standing there looking at me with her head cocked to the side as if to say “hello?” At first glance she was a slim, skittish, young dog with black and tan coloring holding her foot up. Of course being in another country didn’t cross my mind or thought process until later, my first thought was she’s hurt, she needs help and there’s no time like the present. She allowed me to approach her and pet her and oh I can’t even tell you how my heart broke. She was rail thin, had cuts on her foot to the bone and seemed to look straight through you with her eyes. All I could do was pray, “Lord, I’m in another country, my silly phone won’t work and I don’t know what to do but I want to help…please point me in the right direction.” I called her Angel because I figured it would take a miracle to get her home with me to the US the next day.

Things seemed to move at lighting speed and when I think about it now it makes me smile. Complete strangers asking, “what can I do to help?” At one point the concierge service looked at me and said, “this isn’t in the manual.” I simply laughed and though “is it ever?” Within an hour I was in a taxi, paid for my local pool loungers on my way to a local Humane Society in the middle of who knows were. I could never put into words what I saw, smelled or felt upon arriving at their society. The poverty surrounding them was devastating and will be inserted in my brain forever. The building was made of wood and stone and not much else but what I noticed immediately was how friendly all of their volunteers were and how happy all their four legged residents seemed to be. Another God wink, there transporter was a kind lady named Teresa who spoke ENGLISH. She walked me through what would need to happen and what steps we would all need to take.

I spent the next 18 hours worried that we would get stuck at some point, praying that things would go smoothly and finally transported a very scared, cold Angel to my home at 11pm at night. There is obviously so much more to the story. On the way home I kept thinking, wow we have so much and there are so many with so little what could I possibly do to make even a tiny dent. And then it came to me. If you have followed BBPD for any length of time you know we love our four legged babies and Angel is no different. So we are going to challenge you and ourselves.
