Chabad of Cobb is hosting a teen program for boys in grades 8-12. Led by Noah Pawliger, the boys meet for an evening of fun, current events and community service.

The next meeting is scheduled for February 19, from 7-8:30 pm at Chabad of Cobb, 4450 Lower Roswell Rd., Marietta 30068.

Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah this year is Wednesday evening October 19, 2011 – Friday, October 21, 2011

Immediately following the seven-day festival of Sukkot comes the two-day festival of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah. (In the Land of Israel, the festival is “compacted” in a single day).

Shemini Atzeret means “the eighth [day] of retention”; the chassidic masters explain that the primary purpose of the festival is to retain and “conceive” the spiritual revelations and powers that we are granted during the festivals of the month of Tishrei, so that we could subsequently apply them to our lives throughout the year.

The “Four Kinds” are not taken on Shemini Atzeret. We still eat in the sukkah (according to the custom of most communities), but without making the special blessing on the sukkah. On the second day of Shemini Atzeret (i.e., the ninth day from the beginning of Sukkot), we go back to eating in the home.

The second day of Shemini Atzeret is called Simchat Torah (“Rejoicing of the Torah”). On this day we conclude, and begin anew, the annual Torah reading cycle. The event is marked with great rejoicing, especially during the “hakafot” procession, in which we march, sing and dance with the Torah scrolls around the reading table in the synagogue. “On Simchat Torah,” goes the chassidic saying, “we rejoice in the Torah, and the Torah rejoices in us; the Torah, too, wants to dance, so we become the Torah’s dancing feet.”

Other festival observances include the special prayer for rain included in the musaf prayer of Shemini Atzeret, and the custom that all are called up to the Torah on Simchat Torah.

Participants can watch a magic show and make cards for soldiers of the Israel Defense Force. Chai Five is a program that gives children the opportunity to participate in fantastic activities and focuses on teaching children how to make the world better place for all. Cost is $12. The session begins with a served lunch. Chabad Hebrew school students can stay after Hebrew school and go straight to the club.

Chabad of Cobb has been chosen to host the National Southeast Chabad Conference. This will be the largest ever gathering of Jewish communal leaders and rabbis in Cobb County.

The rabbis will be coming together Sept. 11 and 12 for two days of workshops, cutting-edge insights on Jewish issues, networking, learning and inspiration. Leadership from Chabad World Headquarters will be joining the group.

There will be a reception dinner for the conference that will be open to our community Sept. 11. The programs will include speakers and the opportunity to meet some of the pioneers, legends and leadership of the Chabad world. There will also be a special memorial marking 10 years since Sept. 11, 2001 called “Replacing Darkness With Light”.
