We cannot have a sense of community without having a sense of shared values. One of those values we share in East Cobb is a belief in quality education. After all, isn’t that why most people move to this side of Cobb County? Our Back To School section (pages 7-16) includes an overview of East Cobb schools, the budget and our School Board members. From the band booster clubs to the PTA presidents, East Cobb moms and dads are working with teachers and investing their time, money and enthusiasm to ensure their children receive a quality education. Even if you don’t have a child in school we all have a stake in our community’s educational system—from our property values to future leaders to future employees.

Another shared value held by most East Cobbers is our support of our local police. Following last month’s deadly shooting in Dallas, people across the country, and in East Cobb, are performing acts of kindness towards local police officers to show support for law enforcement. As tensions between police and communities remain high, many East Cobbers decided to show their support for men and women in blue by bringing baked goods into the Precinct 4 police station, buying meals for cops and writing thank you cards. On page 18, EAST COBBER showcases the kindness shown by the Widowed Helping Others support group. Spearheaded by Marguerite Pons, the members invited local police officers to their twice-monthly dinner meeting at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. I think you’ll be touched and inspired by the members’ random act of kindness shown toward the police. Marguerite hopes other groups will reach out to the police and invite them for a meal so people can say, “Thanks!” in person.

When deciding to dine out, I hope you’ll refer to our 19th Annual Dining Guide (pages 36-49) for inspiration. You’ll discover that a special evening or a night out with friends can be enjoyed right around the corner at the restaurants we are lucky to have here in East Cobb! With over 300+ restaurants listed, the Dining Guide is also another way EAST COBBER magazine promotes our local businesses.

Here’s to a successful school year, Precinct 4 police, random acts of kindness, and delicious diversions!
