Another school year starts today! As the approximately 113,000 Cobb County public school students head back to school, here’s some updated information from the Cobb County School District.

New Construction

The Cobb County School District Ed-SPLOST (Education – Special Option Local Sales Tax) dollars led to the completion of 46 projects over the summer.

The district is currently in  the process of building and  designing four replacement schools: Brumby Elementary, East Cobb Middle, Walton High, Osborne High.

In addition, major renovation projects are taking place at six high schools: Pope, North Cobb, Campbell, South Cobb, Harrison and Lassiter.

New Teachers

In February 2017, CCSD led the way again by being the first county in the state to distribute contracts to current employees. Through recruiting efforts that began in February and after visiting over 30 colleges and universities, CCSD saw more than 1600 candidates at two job fairs hosted before spring break. As a result, CCSD maintains a competitive advantage over other systems and continues to attract, hire, and retain the very best teachers available.

More than 800 new teachers and over 1,100 total certified vacancies have been filled by the Human Resources Department. Once again CCSD will be fully staffed on the first day of school fulfilling our mission.

School Bus Cameras:

The Cobb County School District is committed to the safety of our children when getting on and off a school bus. A safety-arm camera is designed to reduce the number of violations and injuries on our roadways.

As the 2017-18 school years begins, we want to remind motorists of the law regarding passing stopped school buses:

When a school bus stops for passengers:

·On two-lane roadway: all traffic from both directions must stop.

·On four-lane roadway without a median separation: all traffic from both directions must stop.

·On a divided highway of four lanes or more with a median separation: only traffic following the bus must stop.

·On a roadway with two-lanes,  four-lanes or more with a  center turning lane: all traffic from both directions must stop.

Academic Initiatives

Cobb Teaching & Learning System (CTLS):

The Cobb Teaching & Learning System (CTLS) is a groundbreaking, digital teaching and learning environment designed by the Cobb County School District for the teachers, leaders, students, and families of Cobb County.

This year, teachers have access to a personalized digital environment that serves as a one-stop-shop for all instructional resources, a portfolio of professional learning modules by standard, student rosters and historical student performance; and real-time classroom assessment results.  Teachers also have the ability to customize their digital environment to access resources for any grade level and/or content areas, take notes on lessons, join communities, and enroll in digital and blended learning courses.

In development this year are both parent and student environments.  Parents will have access to a personalized digital environment designed to support their child’s learning.  Parents will also be provided their child’s results from district reading and mathematics diagnostics, classroom assessments along with the ability to customize their digital environment by accessing a collection of tutoring tools, homework help, and supplemental resources to support their child’s learning at home.  Students will have access to a personalized digital learning environment that is connected to their teacher(s), populated with digital learning objects aligned to grade level standards, and access to classroom assessments.  Students will have the ability to customize their digital environment by accessing a collection of tutoring tools, homework help, and supplemental resources to support learning.  Finally, students will be provided individualized learning experiences that are specifically generated, per student, based on the strengths and gaps demonstrated on classroom assessments.

The teacher platform and student platform are scheduled to begin launching in the 2018-19 school year.

Teasley Elementary School – International Baccalaureate Program

Teasley Elementary School has been approved as an Elementary Years IB Program and will begin implementation in select grade levels and course areas this fall.

English Language Arts Instructional Materials, Grades 3-12:

Thanks for the CCSD Board of Education who approved the acquisition of new resources, all teachers and students will have access to new instructional and learning materials in their English Language Arts classrooms this fall.  This summer almost 2,000 teachers participated in training sessions to study the new materials and prepare to use the materials in the coming school year.

New Science and Social Studies Standards:

The Cobb County School District is pleased to announce the implementation of revised teaching and learning standards this fall.  In 2017, the State of Georgia announced new standards in these two core subjects for grades K-12 and subsequently the Cobb County School District facilitated a community review and teacher feedback sessions to review the state standards and make adjustments to customize them for Cobb.  To access these standards visithttp://academics.cobbk12.org/.

Intensive Literacy Instructional Model:

In the fall of 2017, the Cobb County School District launched a Proof of Concept in six elementary school kindergarten classrooms that was designed to intensify reading instruction, increase student proficiency monitoring, concentrate resources, and tailor support for teachers and students so reading growth could be accelerated.  In each of the six Proof of Concept schools, more growth in reading was made by December than in the previous full academic year.  As a result, this Proof of Concept is now being further implemented into the kindergarten classrooms of six additional schools and growing to first grade in the original six schools.
