Pictured on the front cover of this month’s edition are Spencer, Carden and Virginia Wyckoff. Born and raised in East Cobb, they recently traveled 79 miles through the Georgia portion of the Appalachian Trail to raise awareness and funds to cure Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD).

FSHD is a neuromuscular disorder is a form of muscular dystrophy that affects the skeletal muscles of the face, scapula and upper arms. Carden has been living with FSH Muscular Dystrophy since she was 14 years old. As a child she enjoyed the outdoors and could play without issue, but now Carden tires easily and can’t travel long distances.

Throughout the hike, Spencer (with a little bit of help from his friends) carried his sister Carden on his back using a specially designed harness. Their sister, Virginia, also joined them on the adventure to spread the message that no matter what physical limitations are placed on you anyone can reach their goals.
