Three former Cobb County School District students will receive a special posthumous honor with an award named for them. The Navy League of the United States Atlanta Metropolitan Council of Honors created the Wells-Pratt Award for Excellence to jointly honor Marine Lance Corporal Squire “Skip” Wells, a graduate of Sprayberry High School NJROTC, who lost his life in a 2015 terrorist attack at the Chattanooga Navy Operational Support Center, and Lassiter High School NJROTC cadets James and Joseph Pratt. The brothers died in a tragic vehicle accident in April. James had enlisted in the Marines and would have started basic training after graduation in May.

At the banquet, MJROTC Lt. Col. Brendan Floody of North Forsyth High School became the first winner of the Wells-Pratt Award for Excellence. Additionally, NJROTC Cadet Lieutenant Commander Emily Hamilton of Lassiter High School received an Honorable Mention for the Wells-Pratt Award.
