This year the Polar Bear Run 5k/2k celebrates 30 years here in East Cobb, making it the longest running 5k in the area. The race was started in 1989 by Dan and Marty Williams before being acquired by Mark Cottingham and Johnson Ferry Baptist Church as a fundraiser for the High School Choir. Since then the race has grown from 300 to 2,000 participants, one of the largest road races in Cobb County. This event has helped high school students attend mission trips to locations all around the United States, including Chicago, San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles, among others. The choir has also been to Poland 6 times including the scheduled trip in June 2018. The 30th Annual Race will take place at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, 955 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta/East Cobb on January 27.
