More than 300 student percussionists will converge on the Lassiter High School campus this weekend, when the Lassiter Bands Program hosts its 5th annual Percussion Symposium.

The event, which is open to the public, will feature exciting performances by world-renowned professional percussionists and high school student musicians, including a Saturday evening performance by the Florida State University Percussion Ensemble.

Percussion ensembles from 22 high schools in Georgia and South Carolina will perform for evaluation by renowned percussionists Dr. Tom Burritt, University of Texas at Austin; Dr. Timothy Jones, University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and Dr. John W. Parks IV, Florida State University.

“Each of our guest clinicians is widely known not only as an outstanding music educator, but also as a dynamic musical performer,” said Lassiter Percussion Director Mike Lynch. “We are privileged to welcome them to the Lassiter campus and we’re looking forward to giving students a chance to interact with some of the top percussionists in the nation.”

Student performances begin Friday, April 20, at 5:00 p.m. Saturday performances begin at 8:00 a.m. and will culminate with a performance by the Florida State University Percussion Ensemble at approximately 8:00 Saturday evening. Admission is $10 for both days, with proceeds benefitting the Lassiter High School Bands Program.

The Lassiter Bands Program introduced its Percussion Symposium in 2014 to encourage the growth of percussion ensemble activity in a non-competitive environment. Attending students will perform on state-of-the-art instruments provided by Mapex/Majestic. For more information about the event including the full schedule, visit their Facebook page.
