Since 1947, the Voice of Democracy Program has been the Veterans of Foreign Wars premier scholarship program. Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students from across the country compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives.

High School students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. The theme this year is “American History: Our Hope for the Future.” Students compete by writing and recording their 3-5 minute essay.

The VFW also established the Patriot’s Pen Program to encourage students grade 6-8 to compete for National scholarships by writing an essay on a patriotic theme.  The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American Society, by drafting a 300 to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.  The theme this year is “America’s Gift to my Generation.”

The Patriot’s Pen program is open to students who are enrolled in public, private, parochial School or home study programs in the United States and their territories.

Entries are judged on a Post level, with the top entry advancing to District, State and National Levels.  The deadline for entries is Oct 31.  For additional information about scholarship requirements, visit www.vfw.org/community/youth-and-education/youth-scholarships.
